Dog on the Tyne - A Cheap & Secure Dog Exercise Field

This post is based on a visit in March 2022. Please always check with venue direct for the most up to date info.

Dog on the Tyne - A Cheap & Secure Dog Exercise Field

We are at the stage in Fozzy's life where we are looking to let him enjoy some off lead time. We have done this in a public space (and will continue to do so) but there is no denying that letting him off lead around other dogs in an unsecured area is nerve wracking and at the moment, it feels like we can't relax when we do this.

We want to mix off-lead time with short burst in public and longer sessions somewhere secure which is where dog exercise fields come in. There seems to have been a bit of a boom in exercise fields in the last few years and they vary wildly in price from free up to £25. We just wanted somewhere quiet, basic and secure where we could practice whistle recall with Fozzy when he was off lead without too many distractions.

I looked at a few options and settled with Dog on the Tyne. I liked that they were only £6 for half an hour and £1 for an additional dog (many charge £5 for an additional dog), that it was secure, had good reviews, free on site parking, could be easily booked online via their website and there was a pet shop on site too specialising in raw and natural food.

You can book online here: https://dogonthetyne.com/

Address:
Low Spen Paddocks, Spen Ln, Rowlands Gill NE39 2BX

Dog on the Tyne is in Rowlands Gill and was easy to find, as you drive up Spen Lane you will pass the entrance to the pet shop on the left and then you turn into the next field which has the 'Dog on the Tyne' sign on the gate and park just outside of the paddocks.

There are two paddocks to choose from - a 1/3 acre field (which we booked) or a larger 1 acre field which also has some agility equipment in. I have rebooked the larger field for this weekend when Fozzy and Ollie are going to be let off lead together for the first time and will share some photos of that one then.

The paddocks are self-entry - you are emailed a code to access the gate (or the gate might be unlocked) and you just turn up at your specified time.

The paddocks are basic but serve their purpose very well. They have secure 6 foot fencing around the perimeter, there was no dog poo in our paddock, there was a water bowl, bench and bin in our paddock. For £6 I thought it was ideal.

There was a lovely Boxer dog using the 1 acre field next door and we got chatting with her owner. He is a regular and loves it for his dog who he can't let off the lead elsewhere. I think it's ideal for this kind of thing. It also meant Fozzy and the other dog could sniff each other through the fence and I could practice whistle recall to get him to leave the other dog alone which worked well.

We brought our own water but the guy in the field next to us mentioned if you forget, there is a tap in the paddock next door too.

Fozzy had a blast! We practiced whistle training and fetch but most of all he just seemed to enjoy the interaction and space to run around. After around 25 minutes he was super tired so we ended our session a little early. He was worn out!

Just in the background of the above photo you can see a wooden hut in the background, this is the pet shop. The pet shop is open from 10am-4pm Monday-Saturday. It's fab and had a really decent selection of natural and raw foods plus treats and a few toys / balls etc.... too. Make sure you bring your actual card (or cash) rather than google/apple pay as they might need to type your card number in due to card reader issues.

We stocked up on a couple of smaller natural training treats.

The owner was super friendly too. I'm already looking forward to our return visit on Saturday.

PS Riverview Bakery is just a few miles away. A lovely bakery/cafe where dogs are welcome inside too. Their cakes and pies are to die for. Well worth a little detour for. You can find their address and info here:
